Norwalk River Safety
US Rowing Collaboration
(Jan. 09)

NLRC, NRRA and MRC have all collaborated with US Rowing to collate these river safety rules and guidelines, including the river map denoting traffic patterns for upstream and downstream rowers.

NLRC Membership adopts Safety Rules
(Jan. 09)

NLRC Members agree to abide by "River Safety & Traffic Patterns" guidelines.

River Safety & Traffic Patterns

These are directions for rowers/scullers.
Notation of river traffic starts at Route 1/Norwalk Town Bridge and works progressively downstream to Norwalk Harbour and Chimon Island.
Rowers/scullers are asked to obey US Coastguard regulations re. keeping to starboard, passing on port when using Norwalk River, and to use the prescribed traffic pattern when rowing upstream & downstream.
For simplicity US= upstream, and DS= downstream.

River Map

A. Norwalk Town Bridge to Maritime Museum
1). NO crews should paddle through the barges upstream of Norwalk River Rowing Assocn., as the course is narrow, short and limited room to turn.
2). DS Crews must keep to the West Norwalk side of the river, and pass through the I-95 bridge as close as possible to the right-hand side when approached. DO NOT attempt to paddle through the small, rightmost arch of the I-95 bridge.
3). DS Crews should not cut the corner as they approach the Maritime Museum, and approach the area cautiously due to fishermen on the wooden pier that juts out into the river.
4). DS Crews must follow the Maritime Museum shoreline toward the right-hand railway bridge arch. The area is prone to congestion and is narrow.
5). US Crews should steer straight from the Railway Bridge, and not cut inside the small red buoy 150 meters upstream of the bridge that marks rocks and shallows. Crews should not paddle too closely to the side around this bend.
6). US Crews should keep to the East Norwalk side of the river as they approach the I-95 bridge turn, and steer a wide course round this bend and through the bridge.
7). US Crews should proceed with caution within 200 meters downstream of Norwalk River Rowing Assocn., as boats often congregate waiting to dock, and boats are often turning in this area.
8). NO Norwalk River boats should launch into the path of an oncoming US boat, and should wait on the dock until it is safe to paddle into the river.

B. Maritime Museum to Route 136 Lift Bridge
1). DS Crews must follow the Maritime Museum shoreline through the closest railway bridge arch. The area is prone to congestion and is narrow.
2). DS Crews MUST not overtake other crews on this stretch of water.
3). US Crews should keep to the East Norwalk side of the Lift bridge as they enter this stretch, and follow a near straight line to the rightmost railway bridge arch.
4). US Crews should proceed with caution, as Maritime Rowing Club launches boats between the two bridges.
5). NO Maritime boats should launch into the path of an oncoming US boat, and should wait on the dock until it is safe to paddle into the river.

C. Route 136 Lift Bridge to Peach Island
1). DS Crews must follow the SONO Seaport shoreline on the west side of the river.
2). DS Crews should be aware of oyster boats and pleasure craft sailing out into the river, as well as Norwalk Leander crews doing warm-up drills.
3). DS Crews should be mindful of crews waiting to dock at Norwalk Leander, in front of Ischoda Yacht Club.
4). DS Crews should be keep outside the white "No Wake" buoy at mid-low tide, positioned at the end of the marina moorings.
5). DS Crews should be keep within a triangle of the tip of Peach Island and the green channel buoys, on the western-side of the river/harbour, once past the white "No Wake" buoy, positioned at the end of the marina moorings.
6). US Crews should keep to the East Norwalk side of river, on the opposite side to Peach Island, close to the red buoy line marking the river channel.
7). US Crews approaching the Lift Bridge must keep inside, but close to, the buoy line on the East Nrowalk side of the river.
8). US Norwalk Leander Crews wishing to dock must proceed upstream of Norwalk Leander before turning, without impeding any upstream/downstream crews, and proceed asap to the dock and off the river traffic lane.
9). NO Norwalk Leander boats should launch into the path of an oncoming DS boat, and should wait on the dock until it is safe to paddle into the river.

D. Peach Island to Chimon Island
1). DS Crews should keep the "No Wake" rock/light to their port side while rowing out of the harbour.
1). DS/US Crews should be mindful of the end of the "No Wake" zone, where oyster boats and pleasure craft speed up often creating considerable washes.
1). DS/US Crews should be mindful of fish traps, e.g. lobster pots, marked by poles with flags, especially close to Chimon Island.
1). US Crews should keep the "No Wake" rock/light to their port side while rowing into the harbour.
