Did you know?
Hugh Laurie, the British actor who plays Dr. Gregory House in the TV Series "House", rowed for Cambridge University in the Boat race. His father won a gold medal in the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the coxed pairs event.

Rowing was initially part of the first modern Olympic programme in Athens, but bad weather forced the cancellation of the event and so the first rowing medals were awarded four years later in 1900 in Paris.

Women's rowing debuted as an Olympic event at the 1976 Montreal games.

The world's oldest rowing race, the Doggett's Coat & Badge race, first took place in 1715 and was rowed over a 5-mile course between two pubs situated along the Thames in London. It was open to watermen who had completed their apprentice- ship, and still takes place today.

Initially boats were heavy and wide, with fixed seats and oars rested on the side of the boat. In 1846 Oxford University introduced out- riggers, providing more leverage and stability, and therefore leading to the boats themselves becoming narrower and more stream- lined. The transition from fixed seats to sliding ones was implemented by Yale oarsmen in 1870.

The Oxford-Cambridge boat race, perhaps the world's most famous race, was first held at Henley in 1829. Yale and Harvard first rowed against each other in 1852.

The first documented race in American rowing history, in New York City in 1756, took place between a local crew and a whaleboat traveling from Cape Cod to Albany. The first international boat race was also held in New York Harbor in 1824, between a British frigate crew and a local crew, before 50,000 spectators - one-third of New York's population!!
